How to carry sunglasses when you're out, without losing or scratching them

Cream SØNNÆR case hanging from a leather bag handle in a classic car

Sunglasses are taken off more often than almost anything else we carry. Into a shop, out of the sun, into the car, back into the light. Every time, they need somewhere to go, and most of the places we choose are hard on them.

Here are the usual ways to carry sunglasses when you are out, what each one does to the frame and the lenses, and the habit that keeps a pair looking new.

The usual ways, honestly compared

Where Easy to reach What it does to them
On top of your head Yes Stretches the arms and loosens the hinges. They slide off when you bend down.
Hooked on a shirt collar Yes Falls off the moment you lean forward. One arm takes all the weight.
In a pocket Mostly Lenses rub against keys, coins and phone. Easy to sit on.
Loose in a bag No Scratches from everything else in the bag, and they are always at the bottom.
On the car dashboard or visor Yes Heat can warp plastic frames and wear lens coatings over time.
On a strap around your neck Yes Safe from drops, good for sport and boats. Lenses swing against buttons and zips.
In a case on the outside of your bag Yes Lenses covered, frame at rest, and nothing to dig for.

Why on your head is the worst habit

It feels natural, and almost everyone does it. But a frame is shaped to sit on your ears and nose, not around the widest part of your head. Pushed up, the arms spread and the hinges open further than they were made to. Do it for a summer and the glasses start to sit loose and slide down your nose.

They also fall. Bend to pick something up, lean over a table, turn your head quickly, and they land lens first.

Why a case inside the bag rarely works

Most people own a case. Usually it is the hard one that came with the glasses, and it stays at home because it is too bulky to carry. When it does come along, it sits at the bottom of the bag. Finding it takes both hands, so the sunglasses go on your head instead.

A case only protects glasses if it is used every time they come off. That means it has to be quick to reach.

The case on the outside

A case that hangs on the outside of a bag is simply there, on the handle of a tote or the strap of a beach bag. You can put your glasses away without stopping, and they are not under everything else when you want them back.

Ours is made for this. The SØNNÆR case is soft, matte silicone, 6.1 × 2.2 in (155 × 55 mm) and 0.5 in (13 mm) thin when empty, so it hangs close to the bag. A beaded silicone lanyard in the same colour loops it onto a bag handle.

Your glasses slip in through the opening at the back, arms folded outside. The lenses are covered; the case stays light.

Where it earns its keep

  • The beach. Sand finds its way into everything inside a bag. On the handle, the case stays out of it, and silicone rinses clean afterwards.
  • The car. On the bag on the passenger seat, not on a hot dashboard.
  • The city day. In and out of shops, on and off the train, without digging.
  • Travel. Through the airport and the hotel lobby, glasses on and off a dozen times.

Three habits that keep sunglasses looking new

  1. Fold them with both hands. Pulling them off with one hand twists the frame a little every time.
  2. Never set them lens down. If there is no case at hand, rest them on the arms, lenses up.
  3. Give them one place. Glasses are lost in the moment they are put down somewhere new. One case, always in the same spot, ends most searches.

Some keep a case in each place: navy on the everyday bag, cream at the desk, olive in the car. That is what Three Lights is for.

Questions people ask

Is it bad to wear sunglasses on your head?

Now and then, no. As a habit, yes: the arms spread and the hinges loosen, so the frame starts to sit loose on your face. They also fall easily when you bend down.

How do you carry sunglasses without a case?

Fold them and keep them in a pocket of their own, lenses facing your body, away from keys and coins. It is a stopgap. A slim case is the only way to keep the lenses covered.

Can sunglasses stay in a hot car?

Not for long. Heat can warp plastic frames and wear lens coatings over time, and a dashboard in the sun gets far hotter than the air in the car. Keep them in a case, out of direct sun.

Will my sunglasses fit a slim case?

Most will. Our case takes frames up to about 148 mm (5.8 in) across, with lenses up to about 50 mm (2 in) tall. Wraparound sport frames and oversized frames are shaped for a different kind of case. Our fit checker tells you in a few seconds.
