Hard or soft glasses case: how to choose the right one

Most glasses are not ruined by a single drop. They wear down slowly, at the bottom of a bag, next to keys, a phone and a pen. A case is there for those hours, not for the dramatic moment.

So the useful question is not which case is strongest. It is where your glasses spend their day.

Hard and soft, side by side

Hard case Soft case
Protects against Crushing, heavy bags, being sat on Scratches, dust, keys and zips
Size As large empty as full Slim, takes almost no room
Carried every day? Rarely, it stays at home Usually, it fits any bag
Quick to use Two hands to open and close Slip in, slip out
Cleaning Wipe the lining Silicone rinses clean; fabric needs washing
Best for Suitcases, valuable frames, rough days Daily bags, the car, the desk, the beach

What a hard case is for

A hard case is a shell. It keeps its shape under weight, which matters when glasses travel in a suitcase, under a pile of books, or in a bag that gets sat on. If your frames are precious and your days are rough, a hard case earns its bulk.

The cost is size. A hard case is as large empty as it is full, and it rarely leaves the bag it lives in. Many stay at home while the glasses go out without them.

What a soft case is for

A soft case covers the lenses and the frame, so keys and zips stay off them, and it takes up almost no room. Silicone adds something fabric cannot: it rinses clean, and it holds its form without a hard shell.

It will not stop a crushing weight. It is made for the everyday: a tote, a car door pocket, a beach bag, a desk drawer.

The other kinds of glasses case

  • Clamshell hard case. The one that comes with most new glasses. Strong, bulky, usually left at home.
  • Fabric or microfibre pouch. Light and cheap, and the pouch can double as a lens cloth. It keeps off scratches but not pressure, and it collects sand and lint.
  • Silicone case. Soft and slim like a pouch, but it holds its shape and washes under the tap.
  • Folding or triangle case. Flat when empty, a hard shell when folded up. Clever, but fiddly with one hand.
  • Zip sport case. A moulded shell with a zip, made for wraparound sport frames.
  • Case with a lanyard or clip. Hangs on the outside of a bag, so it is used every time the glasses come off. More on that in how to carry sunglasses.

Four questions before you choose

  • Where do your glasses live? A suitcase calls for a shell. A daily bag calls for something you will actually carry.
  • How often do you take them off? If it is ten times a day, the case should be quick to use and easy to reach.
  • What shape is the frame? Wraparound sport frames need a case made for them. Most everyday frames do not.
  • Will they fit? Check the numbers inside the arm and compare them with the case.

Many people end up with both: a hard case for travel, a soft one for every day.

How ours is made

The SØNNÆR case is soft, matte silicone, 6.1 × 2.2 in (155 × 55 mm), and 0.5 in (13 mm) thin when empty. Your glasses slip in through the opening at the back, arms folded outside, and a beaded silicone lanyard loops it onto a bag handle. It arrives with a suede-finish cleaning cloth.

It is made for frames up to about 148 mm (5.8 in) across, with lenses up to about 50 mm (2 in) tall. It is not a shell, and it does not pretend to be. It is the case you take with you.

Questions people ask

Is a soft glasses case enough protection?

For everyday carrying, yes. Most damage to glasses is scratches from keys, zips and grit, and a soft case stops those. If your glasses travel under heavy things, add a hard case for those days.

Do hard cases protect glasses better?

Against crushing, yes. Against scratches, both work. The difference is that a soft case is far more likely to be with you when the glasses come off.

Are silicone glasses cases good?

They sit between a pouch and a hard case: soft and slim, but they hold their shape and wash clean. They will not survive being stood on, and they are not made to.

What case is best for sunglasses?

The one you will carry every day. Sunglasses come on and off more than any other glasses, so a slim case that is quick to reach usually does more for them than a hard one left at home.
